Sunday Song: All I Need (is music)

This week’s Sunday Song came to me as I pulled in to the parking lot at work after lunch on Tuesday. The new soft rock station hopped in their wayback machine to the 1980s with this classic schmaltzy tune, which I then sat in my car and sang at the top of my lungs.

sunday songAfter the success of Rick Springfield, this actor, also from General Hospital, hit the radio airwaves with this sappy love song. As a youngin’ who enjoyed the music and the giggly gossip with other young gals about that silly soap opera, this song was on repeat for some time.

I liked this guy and his singing so much that when he came around town in a production of West Side Story, I gleefully saw it. I wanted to see it again, but my best-friend-at-the-time’s mom said, “You already saw it. Why do you need to see it again?” WHY? Because Jack Wagner is in it! (P.S. You might also know Jack from his stint as Dr. Peter Burns in the 90s campy classic twenty-somethings soap opera Melrose Place and his more recent takeover of the Hallmark channel (apparently)).

Anyhoo, when the song started on Tuesday, I dialed the radio volume up to a billion and sang along. After not hearing this tune for decades, color me surprised when I remembered all the words! This is a quintessential 80s tune. The only thing missing is a saxophone solo, but I guess we can’t have everything.

One video I found featured him on the TV show Solid Gold, for which everyone “performed” by lip syncing, so I decided to settle for the clip that just plays the tune. Pretend it’s the 80s and you’re listening to his fancy falsetto through boom box speakers.

No stars are out tonight, but we’re shining our own light, and it’s never felt so right…

You sing it, Jack.

What is Sunday Song? Well, I’m a musical gal, from my wee days taking piano and drum lessons, to my current stint in a community choir. To me, listening to music is what going to church is for some, so I celebrate with Sunday Song. Each week, I post a song that’s been my earworm for the week or something that reflects what’s happening in my world along with a wee story why. (Feel free to join in by posting in the comments — thoughts about my video/what it means to you, a video you’re enjoying this week, etc.) Also, check out all we do at

I'm a writer who loves to laugh and smile. :-)

  1. Hahaha!

I was talking about the old ’80’s soaps yesterday with a friend. She remembers having such a crush on Frisco Jones (played by Wagner) and Blackie Parrish (John Stamos). Unlike Stamos, Wagner actually has musical talent though.

    1. Your friend and a zillion other people loved Frisco! Wha… Stamos can count to four and plays a mean tambourine! bwahaha. You know he toured with The Beach Boys as a drummer for a time? Uncle Jesse apparently can rock?

  2. I, for one, am amongst the “Frisco Fans” I mean, come on… General Hospital – yep. I used to watch it…
As I was reading, I was trying to guess who you were talking about until it was clear… I thought, not Ricky Martin? 😉
What a trip down memory lane you have brought me on!

    1. Oh, Ricky, he’s so fine… he’s so fine he blows my mind, hey, Ricky… (apologies to Toni Basil). He was on GH in the 90s, if I remember correctly, between Menudo and major solo pop stardom, which arrived about the same time as the new millennium.
      You’re welcome! 😉

          1. We do like to tease those we love 😉
            I graduated high school in ’81 – eesh….
Hmmm… I wonder. I watched when I was home with the babies (and I turned it on the other day and was shocked to see everyone is STILL on… bloody hell!)

            1. I know! I was like… holy moly! Sonny has not aged – at all – and is still mob boss with the oh-so-handsome Jason as his man (at least, I think he is), Marlena and John are still around as are a sh*t-load of others… I thought… man, talk about job security…
