Song Lyric Sunday: Numbers

song lyric sundayAs the great musical poet Kiki Dee once said, “I’ve got the music in me.”

Seriously, though, music is part of my daily life. I sing every day. I’m always listening and/or dancing to something. So when I found Song Lyric Sunday, I just had to participate!

This week’s theme is numbers, and DJ Tara’s choice is… one of three songs she considered, prior to deciding to stop speaking about herself in the third person.

The first song I thought of was 99 Red Balloons and that’s because of some words spoken this week by a world leader who shall not be named. I thought, though, a song about nuclear war would be a downer and I wanted to focus on the upbeat. The second song I thought of was 7 by Prince, which I love, but don’t have a damn clue about what it means (some say it’s based on the Book of Revelation, but all I know is it’s funky).

Then I had my own revelation and the song I’m featuring popped into my head. I loved this song as a wee one and I love it still. I have a similar tendency, though my subject matter may differ than those mentioned in the song. And it’s upbeat and happy and beachy and fun.

Hop in my wayback machine with me to circa 1982, when I was the pre- pre-teen tiny sixth member of this all-girl band (I played air drums and a wicked tennis racket guitar). Enjoy Girl of 100 Lists by The Go-Go’s (despite that misplaced apostrophe that irks me to no end).

Girl of 100 Lists

Ghetto blasters, phony jewels
Cathedrals, castles, making up rules
Trashy novels and leather gloves
This is a list of the things I love

I am the girl of 100 lists
From what shall I wear
To who I have kissed
Check items off
Let nothing be missed
Sing I to myself and my 100 lists

Pick up your laundry, doctor’s at ten
We’re out of toothpaste, rehearsal again
Stop by the bank and cash my pay
These are the things I must get done today

I am the girl of 100 lists
From what shall I wear
To who I have kissed
Check items off
Let nothing be missed
Sing I to myself and my 100 lists

Ricky, Danny, Terry and Jim
Dean lasted six months, don’t forget him
Perhaps some day this list will end
Til then I tally my gentlemen friends

I am the girl of 100 lists
From what shall I wear
To who I have kissed
Check items off
Let nothing be missed
Sing I to myself and my 100 lists

  1. Love the Go-Go’s, but this was a new one for me. Thanks for sharing! I thought about Nena, too, only her original German version 99 Luftballons, but not until I was already midway through my post, so figured I could save it for next time since I was already posting so late. 🙂
