Daisy Smiley Face

It's my happy place.

It’s finally back: This Is Us, which went on hiatus in March, begins season 2 tonight. Before that happens, I thought I’d look back at season 1.

The premise

In case you haven’t started watching (WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR?), I won’t say too much, but I love the premise. Time. Intersection. How people and time and paths crossing affect us. And the babies were born on their daddy’s birthday, just like me.

The kids

I love, love, love these (adult) children. Even with their flaws. That’s what makes them such good characters — they’re just like us! And I didn’t like Milo Ventimiglia as Jess on Gilmore Girls — I didn’t like Jess. But I love Jack Pearson.

The stories

My favorite stories focus on:

  • Kate and her dad, Jack
  • Jack and his son, Randall
  • Randall and his wife and kids
  • Randall and William
  • Randall and anybody actually. He’s my favorite.

Favorite characters

Kate: She has hidden talents. She has inner demons. Everyone is affected by a big family moment, but I think it will be revealed she was impacted more than most.

Randall: He’s type A and smart and filled with anxiety and questions and… I LOVE THIS MAN! I think the fact that he’s portrayed by such an amazing actor helps, too.

The writing

It’s not easy to write well. It’s not easy to write sentimentality without sickening. It’s not easy to make characters relatable, interesting, and that we’ll care about so deeply. It’s not easy to tell stories that are simply about people and the connections between them. This writing staff is amazeballs.

I could go on for days, but I won’t. I have to get ready:

  • Popcorn. Check.
  • Calendar cleared. Check.
  • Tissues. One case, within arm’s reach.

I’m so ready.

Big three… BIG THREE!

I will post a review / thoughts on Wednesday mornings by 10 a.m. after a new episode airs, throughout the season. Be sure to add your thoughts in the comments each week!

Thanks to you I found this show. I enjoyed watching it over the summer. I like Randall the best, too– but without the family dynamics I don’t think we’d get such a well-rounded character… so I like them all. My favorite flashbacks have to do with the old doctor whose story is intertwined with the whole family. I’m hoping Season 2 will be as good as the first one.

Love Dr. K! I could have listed so much more… TOBY at Christmas! AGH! But I didn’t want to go on and on… and on… and on…. 🙂 Glad you’re watching. Perhaps I’ll see you tomorrow morning with thoughts of tonight’s show. YAY!

  2. I’ve not watched this (and have almost completely stopped watching TV), but you’ve piqued my curiosity! If my husband wants to watch it, we might have found our in-home date material to tide us over between our out-of-home dates. 🙂

Deborah, hello! I don’t watch hardly any TV (Jeopardy!, the occasional HBO show). But this show hooked me. It has great acting, wonderful writing. I just hope they don’t all start believing their own press and the show changes because of it. If you do watch, let me know what you think. I’m curious to hear if you like it or not.
