It’s finally back: This Is Us, which went on hiatus in March, begins season 2 tonight. Before that happens, I thought I’d look back at season 1.
In case you haven’t started watching (WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR?), I won’t say too much, but I love the premise. Time. Intersection. How people and time and paths crossing affect us. And the babies were born on their daddy’s birthday, just like me.
I love, love, love these (adult) children. Even with their flaws. That’s what makes them such good characters — they’re just like us! And I didn’t like Milo Ventimiglia as Jess on Gilmore Girls — I didn’t like Jess. But I love Jack Pearson.
My favorite stories focus on:
- Kate and her dad, Jack
- Jack and his son, Randall
- Randall and his wife and kids
- Randall and William
- Randall and anybody actually. He’s my favorite.
Kate: She has hidden talents. She has inner demons. Everyone is affected by a big family moment, but I think it will be revealed she was impacted more than most.
Randall: He’s type A and smart and filled with anxiety and questions and… I LOVE THIS MAN! I think the fact that he’s portrayed by such an amazing actor helps, too.
It’s not easy to write well. It’s not easy to write sentimentality without sickening. It’s not easy to make characters relatable, interesting, and that we’ll care about so deeply. It’s not easy to tell stories that are simply about people and the connections between them. This writing staff is amazeballs.
I could go on for days, but I won’t. I have to get ready:
- Popcorn. Check.
- Calendar cleared. Check.
- Tissues. One case, within arm’s reach.
I’m so ready.
Big three… BIG THREE!
I will post a review / thoughts on Wednesday mornings by 10 a.m. after a new episode airs, throughout the season. Be sure to add your thoughts in the comments each week!
